STEPS OF A METAL POLISHING PROCESS
As mentioned above, a metal polishing process normally entails 3 basic steps which are rough, medium and fine polishing. Depending on the demand of surface smoothness and brightness, the ideal polishing process may differ in specific steps. The 3 basic steps can be described as follows:
ROUGH POLISHING:
Rough polishing is a step where deburring and surface defects removal occurs. Deburring can be done via 3-dimensional vibratory and rotary barrel machines with media (ceramic, stainless steel) and specialized deburring surface active preparations. Defects such as porosities or lumps that may be hard to remove need to be processed with sand-coated polishing wheels or sand-coated belts. The result surface from rough polishing will need to undergo medium polishing prior to fine polishing.
Metal polishing creates smooth and bright metal surfaces
MEDIUM POLISHING:
Medium polishing smoothes the scratches on the surface resulting from defect removal in the rough polishing. Medium polishing is essential to the polishing process as it evens out the surface before giving the surface a bright finish with buff wheels in fine poshing. Felt or sisal wheels and wheel grinding machines are normally used for this step. Medium polishing should be done right after rough polishing.
FINE POLISHING:
Fine polishing is the final step, which aims to achieve the desired brightness for the surface. In this step, workers use soft buff wheels and polishing compounds on grinding machines to bring about the demanded brightness on the metal surface.

METAL POLISHING – AN ESSENTIAL PROCESS IN THE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY
Metal polishing is considered an extremely important supporting industry to any manufacturing industry. The polished product has a better, defect-free outer appearance that raises the product’s value and competitiveness among its peers.
In the past, metal polishing used to be completely manual; the lack of specialized machines resulted in small quantity, long processing time, substantial labor costs and overall little effectiveness. Thanks to specialized machines as well as surface active preparations, media, the quantity and process time have been noticeably improved which drives production up.
