Polishing compound for stainless steel is a catalyst normally applied to grinding and polishing wheels to maximize the result of the polishing process. Common types of compounds include grinding, smoothing, polishing & mirror polishing compounds.
OVERVIEW ON STAINLESS STEEL POLISHING PROCESS & POLISHING COMPOUNDS
Stainless steel products, especially ornaments and household products, require increasingly higher levels of surface brightness and fineness. Specialized polishing machines for metal surfaces such as 3-dimensional vibratory and rotary barrel machines only suffice normal levels of brightness. Therefore, high-quality products normally require manual polishing with the use of specific polishing compounds.

Polishing compounds for stainless steel greatly enhances the level of surface brightness and smoothness when used with grinding machines and wheels. Compounds can be in different colors (blue, white, brown, etc), shaped into rectangular bars and covered in a thin plastic layer.
Beside bar compounds, liquid compounds (yellow, purple, brown) can also be used in the polishing process, especially in automatic & semi-automatic processes. Liquid compounds can be directly sprayed to wheels, which helps reduce time and effort.

THE ROLE OF STAINLESS STEEL POLISHING COMPOUNDS
Smoothing and polishing are two extremely important stages in metal surface treatment, especially for ornaments, furniture, or any products whose values are highly dependent on the outer looks. The most frequently used tools in this process are grinding machines and polishing materials. Among those materials, polishing compounds play an important role in determining the value of the polished product.
TYPES OF POLISHING COMPOUNDS
Polishing compounds can be divided into 02 categories based on usages: compounds for grinding/smoothing and compounds for polishing/finishing.
- White polishing compound bolt approx 250g for pre-polishing stage.
- Blue polishing compound for all materials.
- Brown polishing compound for non-metal pre-polishing and polishing stages.
TIPS FOR USING POLISHING COMPOUNDS EFFECTIVELY
Using polishing compounds is simple. After starting the grinding machine and stabilizing wheel rotation, the polishing compound only needs to be applied onto the rotating wheels. The polishing compound will stick to the wheel surface and later be applied to the workpiece. However, choosing the most suitable compound for the workpiece materials to meet the surface requirements is nowhere near simple; it depends on knowledge about the polishing compounds’ chemical characteristics, workpiece materials as well as hands-on experience.
NOTES ON USING POLISHING COMPOUNDS WITH POLISHING WHEELS:
- Polishing compound needs to be applied on polishing wheels while the machine is operating and the wheels are rotating.
- Make sure to fasten the wheels prior to applying polishing compounds to avoid sudden cease in rotation.
- Use an appropriate amount of polishing compound.
- Wear protective gloves while polishing in order to avoid burning.
