Stainless steel polishing is an important part of surface processing before the product is finished. This is a process to improve the rough stainless steel surface by increasing brightness, removing corrosion and getting rid of defects from the manufacturing process. 

OVERVIEW OF STAINLESS STEEL

Stainless steel is made from steel alloy. Stainless steel is anti-corrosive, light-weight, and bright on the surface. In comparison with other metals, stainless steel is more flexible, more easily shaped, brighter, more easily cleaned and hardly corroded. However, after a long period of usage, stainless steel requires appropriate polishing methods to achieve the original brightness.

Polishing is conducted by applying outside forces to the stainless steel surface in order to improve surface quality. Polishing can either be the last stage or the precedent to another stage in production. 

Stainless steel polishing can either be conducted on the original workpiece or in the last step before completion. 

STAINLESS STEEL POLISHING – MANUAL PROCESS

Stainless steel polishing is normally broken down into 03 stages: rough polishing (smoothing the surface), medium polishing (medium brightness) and fine polishing (complete finish).

• Rough polishing: this is the stage where the surface defects, irregularities and coating are removed via abrasive belts, sheets. Abrasive grit range is #60-#120.
• Medium polishing: this is the middle stage of a stainless steel polishing process, which is intended to increase the evenness, brightness and shininess level of the surface. Non-woven wheels and coated-belts containing grits from #120 to #300 and polishing compounds are used in this stage.
• Fine polishing: this is the completion stage. Buffing wheels are a must-use in order to satisfy high requirements of metal surface. 

Stainless steel polishing requires patients, completion of all three stages, and appropriate use of materials for each stage. The final product quality also depends on the worker’s skills,  quality and appropriate use of machines.

STAINLESS STEEL POLISHING – VIBRATORY PROCESS

Stainless steel polishing requires specialized polishing machines and materials in order to achieve the best result, one of which is the Centrifugal barrel polishing machine (suitable for small workpieces).
