How many types of industrial sand are there?
Aluminum oxide, also known as Al2O3 or Alumina, is an effective thermal and electrical insulator. In its crystal structure, aluminum oxide is also known as corundum (CAS number 1302-74-5), which has a hardness of up to 9 on the Mohs scale and a melting point of up to 2050°C. These properties make it an ideal material for use in abrasive industries and an indispensable component in cutting tools.
Aluminum oxide grit is widely applied in metal surface cleaning processes, including rust removal, stain elimination, and weld cleaning before painting or plating. Additionally, this industrial sand is used for grinding carbon alloy products, stainless steel, treated steel, molds, and in various industries such as shipbuilding, automotive, motorcycles, and mechanical tools.
For convenience in use, manufacturers categorize aluminum oxide grit into three types: brown aluminum oxide grit (brown sand), white aluminum oxide grit (white sand), and black aluminum oxide grit (black sand).
Brown Aluminum Oxide Grit (Brown Sand)
Brown aluminum oxide grit is produced by melting bauxite in an electric arc furnace at temperatures exceeding 2000°C. Extracted from bauxite, brown aluminum oxide grit has high durability and an Al2O3 content of up to 95%. This makes it an ideal blasting abrasive for many applications such as sandpaper production, metal surface preparation, rust removal, and paint cleaning.

White aluminum oxide grit (white sand)
White aluminum oxide grit contains up to 99% Al2O3 in its composition. Compared to brown sand, white sand produces a brighter surface after blasting. Thanks to its high hardness, excellent durability, high specific gravity, and absence of harmful substances, white aluminum oxide grit is considered an environmentally friendly technical abrasive. It plays an important role in the international cleaning industry.

Black aluminum oxide grit (black sand)
Black sand is extracted from bauxite ore through melting in an electric arc furnace, mainly composed of α-Al2O3 and hercynite. Its notable features include medium hardness, good self-sharpening ability, low grinding temperature, and minimal surface burning

Black sand is commonly used in abrasive processes, often in combination with base materials such as felt wheels, polishing wheels, and other abrasive products.
Outstanding advantages of aluminum oxide grit
Transmitting shot blasting machine
Industrial sand, also known as aluminum oxide grit, is considered a perfect choice in surface treatment processes, helping to facilitate painting and coating applications. This product is also favored as an optimal solution for cleaning and removing rust, dirt, old or damaged paint, as well as contaminants on the surface of base materials.
Applications of aluminum oxide also include:
- Creating rough surfaces, preparing them before painting
- Removing rust or old paint layers
- Roughening surfaces to ensure adhesion and coating performance
- Engraving, decorating, and frosting in the glass industry
Using industrial sand or aluminum oxide abrasives in metal surface treatment offers outstanding benefits, including:
- Leaves no rust stains on the product surface thanks to very low iron content in its composition
- Can be recycled and reused multiple times during surface treatment with sandblasting, helping to save costs and optimize budget
- Less breakage and reduced dust generation due to its hardness and durability
- Versatile applications
- Cleans metal surfaces, prepares surfaces before coating, creates texture on glass, and is even used in sandblasting for engraving on tombstones
