How many steps are there in the metal polishing process?

The purpose of metal polishing is to enhance the finish and aesthetics of metal products, thereby increasing their overall value. To achieve this, the polishing process typically involves several stages, ranging from rough polishing to intermediate and fine polishing.

Main steps in the metal polishing process:

As previously mentioned, the metal polishing process typically involves three main stages: rough polishing, intermediate polishing, and fine polishing. Depending on the required level of surface smoothness and gloss, different products may undergo different combinations of these steps. These three polishing stages can be distinguished as follows:

Rough Polishing:

Rough polishing is the grinding stage, removing defects such as burrs, rough spots on the blank, and rough edges on the surface of metal products. To remove burrs, metal polishing machines such as vibrating machines and rotating cage machines are mainly used, combined with abrasive materials (stones, stainless steel balls) and specialized burr removal solutions. As for defects such as rough spots and rough edges that need to be polished to achieve a certain smoothness, it is necessary to use grinding wheels or coated abrasive products to handle. However, the product obtained after the rough polishing process cannot be directly taken to the fine polishing stage but must go through an intermediate polishing step.

Metal polishing helps the product surface achieve the required level of smoothness and gloss.

Intermediate polishing:

This stage involves smoothing out the scratches left by the rough polishing process, helping the product surface achieve an even level of smoothness before moving on to the fine polishing stage using Buff wheels, etc. Intermediate polishing mainly uses Non-woven or Sisal materials (Non-woven wheels being the most common), mounted on Tow-spindle machines for Non-woven wheel’s direct application. This step is often performed immediately after deburring and is rarely separated into two distinct stages.

Fine polishing:

This is the final polishing stage, aiming to achieve a perfect glossy finish on the product surface.
At this point, soft buff wheels are commonly used in combination with polishing compounds to enhance surface shine and visual appeal. The Buff wheel is mounted onto mechanical grinders, and polishing continues until the product reaches the required level of brightness and gloss.

Metal polishing as a key support for manufacturing industries

Metal polishing is regarded as an essential supporting industry in manufacturing. Products that go through the polishing process achieve high aesthetic value, are free from surface defects, and have enhanced commercial value and competitiveness compared to similar items.

In the past, metal polishing was done manually without machinery, resulting in low productivity, high labor costs, and limited efficiency. Today, the use of advanced polishing machines, along with premium polishing compounds and abrasives, has significantly boosted output and efficiency – offering strong support to industrial production.
